Excellence in specialty steel

Stainless steels, tool steels as well as nickel and special alloys made in Germany, with diameters from less than a tenth of a millimetre to over a metre - that is our speciality!

For more than 550 years, tradition, innovation, flexibility and customer proximity have been the basis of our production and satisfied customers.

In 2022, we joined Science Based Targets and have committed us to a scientifically based climate target to reduce our CO2 emissions by 42% until 2030 and to achieve climate neutrality in the long term. In this way, we are consistently pursuing our annual energy savings targets, which were first set in 2012.

Thanks to a high investment rate, BGH has one of the most modern plant structures in the world. Innovations such as fully automated ultrasonic testing facilities for bar steel up to 1 000 mm in diameter or induction heat treatment lines are just a few examples.

With our fully integrated production process - from the melt to the finished wire, bar or open-die forging - we guarantee products for the highest demands.

Whether corrosion-, heat- or wear-resistant: Our stainless steels and special alloys enable advanced developments in areas such as sustainable energy production, mobility, engineering, medical or environmental technology and stand for quality and reliability.

Our service centres offer a broad bar stock range of more than 70 materials, with fast service, worldwide availability and solutions even for your complex procurement tasks.

All our sites are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. In addition, we meet extensive industry and customer approvals and hold other site-specific certificates such as IATF 16949 or ISO 17025.

Areas of application

RELIABLE AND VERSATILE

Stainless steels of the highest quality from BGH have become indispensable in electromobility and alternative drive systems. Whether in the electric brake booster, in the hydrogen system of a fuel cell drive, in the injection system of hydrogen engines or as shaft in an e-bike, our special steels are widely used. They meet the highest demands in terms of strength, corrosion resistance, purity, temperature resistance, material density and microstructure homogeneity.

Our materials have also been used successfully and reliably for years in classic drive and auxiliary units - e.g. in airbag safety devices, in valves, turbochargers, servomotors or catalytic converters.

Focus on durability & biocompatibility

Durability, biocompatibility and the possibility of sterilization are basic requirements for the use of stainless steels in medical technology.

BGH supplies medical stainless steels and alloys for a wide range of applications - from surgical instruments and dental tools, to brace or binding wire to use as implants.
The chemical composition and microstructure are matched to the respective application and duration of skin contact. Our grades meet the highest purity requirements through production in a vacuum furnace (VIM) or the use of remelting processes such as ESR/PESR or VAR.

One example from the BGH portfolio is X40CrMoVN16-2 (1.4123), which is used in surgical cutting tools due to its excellent grinding and polishing properties.

BGH stainless steel for aesthetical and durable cases

Mechanical wristwatches are not only technical masterpieces, the materials used also play a decisive and visible role.

Highly polishable steels with sufficient hardness are used for the cases in order to provide the watches with a durable and aesthetical housing.

BGH supplies, among others, X2CrNiMo18-14-3 (1.4435) produced in the triple-melt process. It is characterised by particularly high purity, so that the highest surface qualities can be achieved during polishing.

Hygienic and dishwasher-safe

Easy to clean, resistant to foods such as fruit acid or vinegar and free of rust stains even after cleaning in the dishwasher - these are stainless steels in the food industry. Their increased chromium content forms a protective corrosion-resistant passive layer on the surface, making them resistant to contact with food and cleaning agents.

We offer grades for every conceivable application, whether for wire baskets or dishwashers, as shafts in mixers, for kitchen machines or fittings in beverage filling systems.

Safety for energy technologies of today and tomorrow

The increasing spread of renewable energy sources such as hydrogen and the use of technologies such as CO2 capture and storage (CSS) require materials that meet the highest safety standards.
The same applies to the exploration, extraction, transport and processing of oil and gas from fossil sources, which will continue to serve as fuels, energy sources for heat and as basic materials for the chemical and plastics industries in the decades to come.

We supply martensite, duplex/superduplex and precipitation-hardening steels that offer the highest corrosion resistance, strength and ductility for the onshore and offshore sectors, ensuring safe long-term operation - our contribution to the supply of energy and basic materials and the development of future technologies.

Climate-neutral electricity generation with BGH stainless steel

The performance and efficiency of modern wind turbines is a good example of how to exploit the potential of high-purity gear steels. In this context, the reliability of the shafts, gear parts and gears is of paramount importance. The BGH case-hardened steel 1.6587, with its high microscopic purity, is exactly the right choice for this and has been reliably contributing to green power generation for a long time.

In the field of hydropower, increasingly effective Pelton, Kaplan or Francis turbines ensure reliable and climate-neutral power generation. BGH supplies pre-turned discs with diameters of up to 2 000 mm for the production of turbine runners. The BGH material X3CrNiMo13-4 (1.4313) is specially optimised for this application and is characterised by high wear resistance combined with good toughness and excellent machinability.
